Glass Sword Audiobook Reviews
Oh Glass Sword…I have this love-hate relationship with your cliffhanger. I hate waiting for the next book. But, cliffhangers stick with me. I think about them, obsess a bit, google spoilers, pre-order the next book and want to find someone immediately who I can talk to about that book.
Book one, Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard, ended on a cliffhanger. I waited patiently for Glass Sword. I had to get it. I just finished reading it. It ends on…wait for it…another cliffhanger. And, I also loved this Glass Sword almost as much as Red Queen. Which is hella lot.
The marketing girl in me applauds the author. A cliffhanger is the perfect tease, so memorable when done well. The reader in me screams. And may throw things.
Mare, our Red h with lightning shooting from her fingers, is on a mission to find more people like her. There are other Reds with abilities and she wants them for her army. She wants to take down Maven, the young king she once cared for, but actually turned out to be a major dick. On that part…I kind of wonder. Is it possible he’s not awful, and there’s something we don’t know about him? I read a lot of musings on this after this book (note my addiction to googling books) and some are still #TeamMaven.
This story is really about Mare and her struggle with her own humanity. The anger and hurt she’s feeling, her desire to save the world….but at what cost? She maybe turning into a bit of a monster. There are moments when her behavior is terrible, she kills people who didn’t need to die. Mare is full of flaws.
Mare, Cal, Farley, Kilorn and Shade team up to find the super Reds before Maven does. It’s an uneasy alliance. No trust. That’s a theme, too…trust no one. At some point, every character has something to hide, an agenda, a reason to lie. I LOVED it. Lots of surprises. They go on one rescue mission after another, many with great success. I delighted in learning about the powers possessed by the new super Reds. Maven gets to some super Reds before our heroes and his evil and total depravity is shocking. Hard to reconcile the old Maven with this one.
Then there’s Cal. He killed his father. Not his fault, the queen controlled his mind and made him do it. People hate him. They fear him. He has no home, no family, no place to be or life to live. He’s lost. I felt bad for him and then at times I thought, well…you weren’t really a great guy. He turned his back on a lot of disfunction in the kingdom. Outright, ignored it. There’s chemistry with Mare and Cal. Again, not really any trust happening though. They definitely grow closer through shared experiences, pain and a small bed. I’m not sure what I think about them. Am I #TeamCal? I can’t say.
Then we have the end of Glass Sword. The cliffhanger. The last bit. Plot twist. Big time.
