In the introduction to the book, King describes the unusual method he used to sort the stories:
What I did was take all the spades out of a deck of cards plus a joker. Ace to King = 1-13. Joker = 14. I shuffled the cards and dealt them. The order in which they came out of the deck became the order of the stories, based on their position in the list my publisher sent me. And it actually created a very nice balance between the literary stories and the all-out screamers. I also added an explanatory note before or after each story, depending on which seemed the more fitting position. Next collection: selected by Tarot.

Includes the story “The Man in the Black Suit”—set in the fictional town of Castle Rock, Maine
From #1 New York Times bestselling author Stephen King, the iconic, spine-tingling story collection that includes winners of an O. Henry Prize and other awards, and “Riding the Bullet,” which attracted over half a million online readers and became the most famous short story of the decade, as well as stories first published in The New Yorker, “1408,” made into a movie starring John Cusack.
“Riding the Bullet” is the story of Alan Parker, who’s hitchhiking to see his dying mother but takes the wrong ride, farther than he ever intended. In “Lunch at the Gotham Café,” a sparring couple’s contentious lunch turns very, very bloody when the maître d’ gets out of sorts. “1408,” the audio story in print for the first time, is about a successful writer whose specialty is “Ten Nights in Ten Haunted Graveyards,” or “Ten Nights in Ten Haunted Houses,” and though Room 1408 at the Dolphin Hotel doesn’t kill him, he won’t be writing about ghosts anymore. And in “That Feeling, You Can Only Say What It Is in French,” terror is déjà vu at 16,000 feet.
Whether writing about encounters with the dead, the near dead, or about the mundane dreads of life, from quitting smoking to yard sales, Stephen King is at the top of his form in the fourteen “brilliantly creepy” (USA TODAY) tales assembled in Everything’s Eventual. Intense, eerie, and instantly compelling, they announce the stunningly fertile imagination of perhaps the greatest storyteller of our time.

I was an avid Stephen King reader in high school, but I haven’t really liked some of his later stuff. It seems like he gets really involved and I lose interest. I’m not trying to be insulting, it’s just me, and obviously he’s doing just fine without my business. But, and that’s a big but, I loved this book!!! Apparently short stories from Mr King are perfect for me. I felt like I was reading a book he’d written in the seventies or eighties. Every story, except one, had me riveted to my seat. My kindle died and I just moved closer to the outlet and continued reading. 1408, the main reason I bought this book, was worth it. I’m reading, wondering when anything scary is going to happen, only to realize it’s already happening and I’m terrified. Trust me, especially if you loved Stephen King like I did (Salems Lot, Carrie) then this book is for you.
Autopsy Room Four, L.T.’s Theory of Pets, Lunch at the Gotham Café, Luckey Quarter and The Man in the Black Suit were first published in a limited edition collection called Six Stories in 1997. The Man in the Black Suit won the World Fantasy Award and the O. Henry Award for ‘Best Short Fiction’.
Everything’s Eventual is a very strong collection. There are a lot of great stories in it. In the Deathroom is about a man taken in for ‘questioning’ about his association with a radical in a foreign country and realises he might never get out of the room alive. King does a great job of building tension. The Little Sisters of Eluria features Mid-World’s version of vampires. I loved this novella. It serves as a sort of prequel to The Dark Tower novels. The title story is one of the most surprising and unsettling stories I’ve ever read. The Road Virus Heads North is also one of my favourites. What’s not to love about a creepy picture that comes to life? I love the title of this story as well. 1408 is another favourite. I first read this as a four page ‘story’ called Hotel Story in King’s memoir/non-fiction book On Writing where he used it to show how a writer can move from a 1st to 2nd draft. I loved hearing the full version on Blood & Smoke and reading it was even better. The other stories with the exception of That Feeling, You Can Only Say What It Is In French and Luckey Quarter were very good.

Of the stories King wrote for this collection, two became films and another is in the works. The novella Riding the Bullet became a direct-to-video film by the same name, released in 2004 and directed by Mick Garris, who made many films and TV miniseries of King’s works, and the film 1408 (2007) appeared in theaters, starring John Cusack. “The Death of Jack Hamilton” was adapted for the screen for the first time as part of King’s “Dollar Baby” deal, and an official teaser trailer for the film was released on September 1, 2012, with an expected release date in 2013.
